Trip to Herstmonceux – FULLY BOOKED

June 28, 2014 @ 10:00 am - 6:00 pm

Herstmonceux Castle 2

THIS TRIP IS NOW FULLY BOOKED

The Flamsteed History of Astronomy and Radio Astronomy Groups are organising a trip to Herstmonceux on Saturday 28th June. This would be an all day trip, with the science centre open from 10am to 6pm. We will not be arranging travel, but will try to facilitate car sharing for those who wish to attend. The journey to Herstmonceux takes around 1.5-2 hours. We would expect car passengers to share the cost of petrol. There is plenty of car parking available on the site.

We will be eligible for a group discount for tickets, meaning that the cost of entry on the day will be £7 for adults and £5.25 for seniors. There will be an extra cost of £1 for the telescope tours (see below). We have arranged for an extended private tour of the telescopes, including those that are not normally open to the public. There are 6 telescopes in total, 3 of which are not normally open to the public:

  • Dome A – The 30-inch Thompson Reflector (not open to the public), 1896.
  • Dome B – The 36-inch Yapp Reflector, 1932.
  • Dome C – The 34-inch Hewitt Camera (not open to the public), 1962.
  • Dome D – The 13-inch Astrographic Refractor (not open to the public), 1890.
  • Dome E – The 26-inch Thompson Refractor, 1896
  • Dome F – The 38-inch Congo Scmidt, 1960, and The Domes of Discovery Exhibition

Four of these telescopes, of course, were situated in Greenwich prior to the move to Herstmonceux in the 1950s.

Details of the location can be found at the Observatory Science Centre website, at http://www.the-observatory.org.

If you would like to attend this trip, please contact us (members only).
