A total solar eclipse will take place on Friday 20 March, 2015. Though the path of totality is from just below Greenland, heading north into the Arctic Circle, there will be a large partial solar eclipse visible from London.
In London, the partial eclipse begins from around 8.25am and ends at about 10.40am, with 85% of the Sun covered at 9.30am. The Sun will be 20 degrees above the horizon in the south-east at the start of the partial eclipse. At the maximum (85% covered), it will be 28 degrees high, and at the end, 35 degrees high. Azimuth ranges from 119 degrees to 152 degrees.
We will be running a solar viewing event to coincide with this partial eclipse at the Royal Observatory Greenwich.
The event will take place in front of the General Wolfe statue in Greenwich Park, close to the entrance to the Royal Observatory Greenwich. There will be plenty of specialist solar telescopes and other telescopes converted to solar viewing for people to use. Solar glasses will also be available for people to view the eclipse as it progresses.
Everyone is welcome to attend this event. The event is free of charge.
