Flamsteed History of Astronomy Group Meeting.
Graham Dolan will be speaking on the subject “William Christie and the demise of the Royal Greenwich Observatory”.
William Christie is best known as the Astronomer Royal (1881–1910) who procured many of the Observatory’s largest Telescopes. In this lecture, Graham will look at not only how the appearance of the Greenwich site changed under Christie, but also how the administrative practices changed too. He will then consider how Christie’s wider legacy, the two world wars that followed his departure and the creation of the Science Research Council in 1965 set the scene for what was arguably the Observatory’s inevitable demise.
Graham was formerly Education Officer at the ROG and is now the unofficial leading historian of the Observatory and Prime Meridian. Since his retirement he has been building and editing his websites which are outstanding resources for all with an interest in the Observatory.
