Sir John Frederick William Herschel

Flamsteed History of Astronomy Group Meeting.

Roy Hookway has kindly agreed to give another talk to the Flamsteed History of Astronomy group.

John Herschel was the only son of Sir William Herschel, the discoverer of Uranus, and Mary Pitt. John was initially educated at home, surrounded by the leading scientists of his father’s era and rose to be one of the most eminent and influential scientists of the 19th century. He dedicated his life to completing the monumental star catalogues begun by his father and Aunt Caroline. He was an outstanding astronomer and mathematician and produced scientific papers on geology, meteorology, chemistry, botany, and photography. He was a leading proponent of educational reform and was a talented musician, linguist and draughtsman. Although he made no major breakthroughs for which he is remembered today, he was considered by his contemporaries as almost the equal of Newton. This talk will explore John’s life and underline the influence he had on the flowering of 19th century science.
