History of Astronomy Group Meeting: “Mag and Met” by Louise Devoy

February 24, 2015 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

armillarysphereLouise Devoy, Curator of the ROG, will be speaking on “Mag and Met” — Magnetic and meteorological observations have long been part of the research output of the Royal Observatory Greenwich but this aspect of the site’s rich and complex heritage is often overlooked in favour of its role within the history of astronomy, navigation and timekeeping. To help redress this imbalance, Louise will provide an overview of the people and instruments associated with the magnetic and meteorological research at the Observatory. While the key buildings and structures have long since disappeared from the site, Louise will bring them back to life with historic photographs, delightful sketches from the Illustrated London News and photographs of our collection of surviving instruments, many of which were innovative designs for their time”.

Many of us have just enjoyed Louise’s splendid tour of the astronomy collection in the Kidbrooke store and her talk promises to be new and most interesting.

THIS EVENT IS OPEN TO MEMBERS OF THE FLAMSTEED ASTRONOMY SOCIETY ONLY.

Please do not book a place on this event if you are not a member of the society. Your booking will be cancelled if your name does not appear on our membership database.
