When Isaac Newton said that he had seen further than most because he had stood on the shoulders of giants, he ought to have been referring to Johannes Kepler (though he probably wasn’t). The parallels between the two men are extraordinary – though their characters couldn’t be more different. But Kepler’s achievements are so great that even Einstein acknowledged his genius. In this talk, Flamsteed chair Andy Sawers shares what he has learned about the life and work of Kepler, and how some of his ideas show that he was tantalisingly close to being the discoverer of the great universal laws of nature, rather than Newton.
