During the heavy rain-storms of the last two weeks the Flamsteed House apartments have suffered significant water damage from roof leaks. Two of the rooms have been closed for repairs. That means only two (i.e. half) of the rooms are now accessible to visitors with more than half of the new exhibits temporarily off display. This event has therefore been cancelled and we will look to re-arrange when repairs are finished, the rooms re-open, and the exhibits completed.

New exhibits in the ROG Flamsteed House Apartments are now on display with the title ‘Observatory Life’. They tell the story of two families and their Astronomers Royal who lived and worked there – Nevil Maskelyne, 5th AR 1764-1811; and Sir George Biddell Airy, 7th AR 1835-1881.

Louise Devoy, Curator of the ROG, has very kindly agreed to give us two curator tours of the exhibits on Saturday July 2nd at 10:30am and 11:30am. Each tour will last about 40 minutes. Louise will explain the background to the exhibition and talk about her favourite pieces in the displays. Louise commutes to Greenwich from the Arctic and we are especially fortunate she has agreed to lead the tours on a Saturday.

Because of the small room spaces in the Apartments, places are very limited, to 10 people per tour, and it will be necessary to BOOK A PLACE if you are interested in attending. Please indicate which group you wish to join (10.30am or 11.30am).

Once completed, you should receive a confirmation email. There is no need to log on to the Flamsteed website or create an Eventbrite account in order to make a booking. THIS EVENT IS OPEN TO MEMBERS OF THE FLAMSTEED ASTRONOMY SOCIETY ONLY.
