THIS EVENT IS CONFIRMED ON
We are planning an observing session at our usual spot on Blackheath on Tuesday 30th June from 9.00pm. This event will primarily be to view the close conjunction of Venus and Jupiter as they begin to set in the South West. They will then only be one third of a degree apart. This conjunction will be the last opportunity to see such a close conjunction of these two planets until 2023 which will still not be as close.
It will still be quite light at 9.00pm, hence the late start. There is also a Members Solar Viewing event taking place at the ROG, which will finish around 8.30pm. Therefore we are also allowing time for people to get from this to Blackheath if they wish to attend both.
Following the conjunction, Saturn will be on the Meridian around 10.15pm for those of you who have not seen the ‘star’ of our solar system yet this year. Although low in the Sky, Saturn will make for a particularly good sight as its rings a quite heavily tilted towards us.
We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible. Bring a scope if you can, if not just turn up for a look. There will be other scopes available.
Blackheath is quite exposed, but the evening promises to be clear and pleasantly warm, so woolly hats may be left at home!.
The plan is to meet on Blackheath, just north of Talbot Place at 9.00pm. Talbot Place is a right turn off Goffers Road as you head towards Shooters Hill Road or the first left after the Tea Hut. Talbot Place is a cul-de-sac where you will be able to park at the side of the observing area.
