THIS EVENT IS CONFIRMED ON
We will be holding a Blackheath observing session on Friday 11th March from 7.30pm. The location for this event will be Blackheath.
At the start of the evening, the constellation of Orion will already be past the meridian but still high enough to afford us good views of the great Nebula M42 and the star field surrounding the attractive double of Sigma Orionis. As the evening progresses Jupiter will rise high in the sky with its Red Spot being visible on Friday from about 7.30-10.30pm together with Io and Europa being particularly close to each other. If seeing permits the icy white of Europa should contrast well against Io’s yellow colour. Also visible in the South East from about 8.00pm, (albeit at mag +8.7!) will be Comet P/2010 V1 (Ikeya-Murakami). Perhaps a bit faint for London skies but we will have a go at finding it!
We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible. Bring a scope if you can, if not just turn up for a look. There will be other scopes available.
Blackheath is quite exposed, so please remember to wrap up warm.
As normal a go/no-go announcement will be made at 5pm.
The plan is to meet on Blackheath, just north of Talbot Place at 7.30pm. Talbot Place is a right turn off Goffers Road as you head towards Shooters Hill Road or the first left after the Tea Hut. Talbot Place is a cul-de-sac, where free parking is available from 6.30pm. A map of the site can be found here – http://www.flamsteed.org.uk/observing/stargazing-events/blackheath-stargazing/ .
