Blackheath Observing – Saturday 11 July – CONFIRMED ON

July 11, 2015 @ 7:30 pm - 11:30 pm

Blackheath Stargazing

Blackheath Observing

THIS EVENT IS CONFIRMED ON

We are planning an observing session at our usual spot on Blackheath on Saturday 11 July from around 7.30pm. This event will primarily be to view the planets. Venus, Jupiter before they begin to set and Saturn which will be in the south. Early in the evening, we will be attempting to view the Sun using specialist solar telescopes.

Having waited so long for Saturn to appear in our skies again and at a reasonable hour, it is already past the Meridian by 10pm, so for those of you who have not seen the ‘star’ of our solar system yet, take the opportunity now. Although low in the sky, Saturn will make for a particularly good sight, as its rings are quite heavily tilted towards us.

We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible. Bring a scope if you can, if not just turn up for a look. There will be other scopes available.

Blackheath is quite exposed, but the evening promises to be pleasantly warm, so woolly hats may be left at home!.

The plan is to meet on Blackheath, just north of Talbot Place at 7.30pm. Meet from 9.30pm if you only want to view the planets. Talbot Place is a right turn off Goffers Road as you head towards Shooters Hill Road or the first left after the Tea Hut. Talbot Place is a cul-de-sac where you will be able to park at the side of the observing area. A map of the site can be found here – http://www.flamsteed.org.uk/observing/stargazing-events/blackheath-stargazing/ .
