THE SATURDAY EVENING EVENT IS CONFIRMED ON
NOTE THAT THE OBSERVING EVENT ON FRIDAY EVENING HAS BEEN CANCELLED AND MOVED TO SATURDAY EVENING
We will be holding an observing event at our usual location on Blackheath on Saturday 21st February from around 6pm.
This is an earlier start than normal as Mars, Venus and the Moon will all be in view together at about 17° above the horizon in the West and should be visible to us for a good hour. Mars will be occulted by Venus officially on Saturday when the Moon will be higher in the sky so Friday offers us the most aesthetic view.
As we move further into the night we will be joined by the popular sights around Orion and now high in the sky, Jupiter when the Galilean moons will all be visible toward the end of the night.
So we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible. Bring a scope if you can, if not just turn up for a look. There will be other scopes available.
Blackheath is quite exposed, so please remember to wrap up warm.
The plan is to meet on Blackheath, just north of Talbot Place at 6.00pm. Talbot Place is a right turn off Goffers Road as you head towards Shooters Hill Road or the first left after the Tea Hut. Talbot Place is a cul-de-sac, where free parking is available from 6.30pm. PLEASE NOTE: Parking will be chargeable from 6.00 to 6.30pm and you cannot park next to the heath as we normally do until the restriction ends. Remember to bring change or download the ‘Ringo’ parking app to your phone. A map of the site can be found on the Flamsteed website – http://www.flamsteed.org.uk/observing/stargazing-events/blackheath-stargazing/ .
