The Flamsteed Astronomy Society is pleased and excited to play such a major part in the BBC Stargazing Live to be held at the National Maritime Museum in January 2013. Outside, visitors will be able to view the night sky from beside The Queens House using a wide range of over twenty instruments from inexpensive binoculars to large telescopes. The large uninterrupted view of the heavens to the south is dissected by the Zero Meridian Laser and provides a magnificent view of the Royal Observatory illuminated on top of the hill. Inside the National Maritime Museum, Flamsteed volunteers will provide illustrated talks on Astrophotography, while introducing other guests to Solar Viewing, Radio Astronomy and what to look for in the night sky. There will also be a display of equipment and an informal Telescope Workshop with helpful advice to help visitors decide which equipment might best suit them. Over forty Flamsteed Volunteers will be involved in this event.
Activities planned for the evening are as follows:
- We will be providing telescopes for visitors to view the night sky. In the event of poor weather, the telescopes will be moved into the colonnade to provide shelter from the elements.
- Inside the museum, we will have talks about astrophotography and demonstrations.
- A few telescopes will be inside the museum so that we can run a telescope workshop.
- Solar viewing and radio astronomy equipment will be on display with presentations and talks linked to this equipment.
- There will be a presentation on what to see in the night sky.
